The successful launch on 29 November 2001 of the BBTS Web site (http://www.bbtshk.com) has resulted in positive feedback from both our Members and the general
public. More than 56 member organisations offered specially discounted rates or promotional products to the public and staff of member organisations, which
contributed greatly to the success of the launch. It also enabled Members to enjoy free advertising exposure via the Web site.
As well as promoting the BBTS Web site in a two-page colour supplement featured in Oriental Daily and a half-page supplement in the South China Morning Post,
there was additional opportunity for BBTS and its 680 members to market themselves to consumers through the promotion of the BBTS vision and mission. More than
2,000 e-mail messages were also sent to support the launch.

Also included as part of the campaign was a "Free Gift Offer" of a cube radio, which added another dimension to the overall promotion. Some 300 e-mail
registrations for the free gift were recorded by the Secretariat on the Web site launch day.
BBTS joins New Year parade
The Association of Better Business and Tourism Services (BBTS) increased its Chinese New Year spirit this year by
participating in the 2002 Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade and Fiesta (CNYP). This was the first occasion the organisation had taken part
in the Parade, resulting in an even busier time for all.

The BBTS float was designed to represent the Association and its role within the tourism services industry. The float highlighted the important economic contribution that the
tourism industry makes to Hong Kong and encouraged more merchants to join BBTS in the pursuit of better business practices.
Sporting a large, smiling shopping bag on the front, the float was colourfully decorated with gift boxes, four cartoon-style chefs and salespeople. In hot pursuit of the float were
two stilt-walkers dressed as chefs leading an energetic group of dancers representing waiters and waitresses from the food and beverage sector, as well as sales staff from the retail sector.

BBTS was delighted to have had the opportunity to demonstrate its commitment and support to the travel and tourism industry of Hong Kong. Additionally, it gave BBTS much pleasure to join some 280,000
spectators along the parade route in celebrating the Lunar New Year and in sending greetings to millions more around the world via the media.
Eight member organisations - Chow Sang Sang Jewellery Co Ltd; Emphasis; Episode; Forum Restaurant; Hsin Kuang Restaurant; Jessica; Sa Sa Cosmetics and Tom Lee Music Co Ltd - generously sponsored the BBTS float
and fei chun (traditional Chinese New Year greeting messages), contributing greatly to raising the profile of BBTS in the public domain.

BBTS also hosted a booth at the Tamar Site distributing souvenirs, promotional coupons and marketing literature to visitors. Staff at the booth were very busy with the discount coupons which were presented in
traditional Chinese lai see packets. A total of 28 member organisations distributed their marketing materials from the BBTS booth.

Relaunch heralds new era
The BBTS bi-monthly publication, Trade News, has been re-launched as BBTS.News.
As well as receiving a new title, BBTS.News has been given a facelift. Its new page layout and tabloid format have been designed to reflect the new energy and direction of BBTS and will provide Members with
in-depth coverage of relevant industry news, trade-related events and other topics of interest.

Putonghua Day
In sup.port of Hong Kong's first official "Putonghua Day", held on 13 September 2001, more than 60 BBTS member organisations with a total of 500 participants joined in the SAR-wide campaign offering discounts
to shoppers who spoke Putonghua (Mandarin) that day. The aim of the campaign was to encourage more frontline staff, as well as residents, to learn and speak Putonghua.

Retailers and restaurateurs actively encouraged staff to attend the "Speaking Putonghua in the Servicing Line" seminar organised by RTHK's Putonghua language station. A total of 39 BBTS organisations represented
by 200 frontline staff attended the seminar to learn phrases most frequently used by frontline retail staff.

The 7th BBTS Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Friday,
14 September 2001, at the Hotel Miramar, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon and was attended by 80 Members and their guests.
Hong Kong Tourism Board Executive Director, Ms Clara Chong, addressed Members after the meeting. Honorary Adviser and Hong Kong Tourism Board Chairman, The Hon Mrs Selina Chow, JP, demonstrated her commitment to BBTS by arriving at
the Annual General Meeting directly from the airport. Her presence and support was highly appreciated by BBTS and its Members.

"Tell Your Hong Kong Story"
BBTS Governing Council Members this year again demonstrated their support and commitment to the "Know Hong Kong" community programme, organised by Hong Kong Tourism Board. Members contributed a wealth of prizes to the
"Tell Your Hong Kong Story" competition.
This competition encourages Hong Kong residents to share their local folk tales and myths with visitors to encourage further exploration of Hong Kong's fascinating and diverse history and culture. These tales add
yet another dimension, and indeed a human element, to our world-famous attractions.

2001 Hong Kong Awards for Services |
The Hong Kong Awards for Services Scheme recognises and encourages excellence in different sectors of the service industries in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Tourism Board was the organiser of the Tourism Services category of the Scheme in 2001.
The Awards Presentation Gala Dinner was held on 10 December 2001, where Financial Secretary, The Hon Anthony Leung, presented trophies to the Grand Award winners of the five categories of the Scheme.

BBTS extended congratulations to the winner of the Grand Award 2001 Hong Kong Award for Services: Tourism Services, Rainbow Seafood Restaurant, and Subsidiary Award winners Duty Free Shoppers Hong Kong Limited, On Kee Dry Seafood Co Ltd,
JW Marriot Hong Kong Hotel and Regal Airport Hong Kong Hotel, which were recognised for their outstanding services in support of Hong Kong's tourism services industry.

| Seminars raise awareness |

Crime Prevention Seminars. |
Two seminars on crime prevention, jointly organised by BBTS and the Crime Prevention Bureau, were held on 21 and 23 August 2001 for members of the retail and restaurant sectors.
Attendance was very positive; there were 49 frontline staff from 32 retail and other tourism-related member organisations, as well as 44 restaurant managers and staff. Participants were given useful hints on how to prevent crime and petty theft in dining locations.

Crime Prevention Bureau Training Officer, Mr Frankie Hui, screened a surveillance camera video that demonstrated how to prevent crime. He also spent some time discussing and answering queries on crime prevention methods.
Presentations inform and inspire

Presentations about the Hong Kong Tourism Board's HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale and the "Loan Guarantee Scheme for Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs)" were part of a seminar held on 10 April 2002 at the Hotel Miramar, which attracted some 80 participants and their guests from Member organisations.

The BBTS Secretariat was delighted to have had the opportunity to host the Hong Kong Tourism Board's General Manager-Destination Marketing, Mr Lambert Chan, and to gain an insight into the Hong Kong's longest and largest shopping extravaganza, launched mid-June 2002.
Trade and Industry Department Senior Executive Officer, Ms Doris Chow and Shanghai Commercial Bank Ltd Marketing Manager, Mr Dixon Iu briefed Members on the latest SME Scheme, where the Government will act as the official guarantor for individual SMEs wishing to borrow
money from banks. This Scheme has been created to facilitate the securing of SME loans from banks and financial institutions, and to generally enhance the productivity and competitiveness of SMEs.
