2002 Hong Kong Award for Services: Tourism Services
BBTS member organisations were once again in the spotlight at the Hong Kong Award for Services: Tourism Services, organised by Hong Kong Tourism Board. In 2002, Hong Kong Award for Services: Tourism Services, were awarded to five BBTS member organisations in the competition.

Madame Tussaud's Hong Kong was presented with the Grand Award, while Café Deco Bar & Grill; Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Co. Ltd.; Morton's of Chicago and Pak Shing Tong Ginseng Co. Ltd were all awarded the Subsidiary Award during the Award Presentation held on 18 December 2002. The 2002 Hong Kong Award for Services scheme is held to recognize and encourage excellence in different sectors of the service industries.

BBTS member organisations were presented with awards at the Hong Kong Award for Services : Tourism Services ceremony.

HSBC Mega Sale
BBTS members demonstrated their overwhelming support for the HSBC Mega Hong Kong Sale which was the SAR's first ever shopping promotion. The event, held from 15 June to 31 August 2002, aimed to stimulate Hong Kong's retail and restaurant businesses and to reinforce Hong Kong's status as a "Shoppers paradise".

Around 500 BBTS member outlets, representing nearly a quarter of the total number of 2,100 participating outlets, took part in the campaign. For every HK$300 spent on a single receipt at a participating retail outlet, shoppers were entitled to participate in a Lucky Draw with winners receiving sensational prizes worth over HK$10 million in the daily Lucky Draws and the Grand Lucky Draw. Participating merchants were also rewarded for every prize-winning visitor and each received a coupon for a dinner banquet for 10 people worth HK$2,500, and a mobile phone. The event has seen several millions dollars in prizes presented to 14 locals and the same number of visitors.

Putonghua Month 2002
To improve BBTS members' spoken Putonghua and increase their awareness of the importance of using Putonghua, BBTS gave full support to "Putonghua Month" as organized by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and Putonghua Alliance.

The programme was held from 15th September to 13th October 2002 and included a Putonghua Shopping Discount Programme, Territory-wide Putonghua Singing Contest, One-Minute Putonghua, Celebrities Speak Putonghua, Q-mark Putonghua Test Scheme and Putonghua Web site. In the Putonghua Month Purchase Discount Programme, BBTS members offered discounts of 10% or more to Putonghua-speaking customers and to those displaying the "Putonghua Month Purchase Discount Programme" sticker during the promotion period.

City of Life Street Carnival
To further promote Christmas cheer, BBTS member organisations, together with other sponsor organisations, participated in the "City of Life Street Carnival" at Golden Bauhinia Square, Wan Chai, from 2 December 2002 until 5 January 2003. The Carnival, which included a three-day stage programme featuring a diverse range of events and attractions to demonstrate Hong Kong's East-meets-West characteristics, was one of the "Hong Kong WinterFest" highlights aimed at raising people's Christmas spirit and to provide Christmas cheer.

Special Meetings for BBTS Transformation to QTSA
To ensure the smooth transformation from BBTS to QTSA, BBTS Governing Council Members held a total of 5 meetings, commencing on October 2002 to January 2003, to discuss the details and process for transformation.

Annual General Meeting
The 8th BBTS Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday 5 December 2002 at the Hotel Miramar, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon and was attended by 60 members and guests.

General announcements made at the meeting included the approval of the Association's 2001 Annual Report and Financial Statement; and the re-appointment of Mazars as the Association's auditor for 2002.

Special business included notification of the postponement of nominations and elections for Governing Council Members to the next AGM in 2003. Tourism Commissioner, Mrs Rebecca Lai was invited as a guest speaker to address our Members. Hong Kong Tourism Board Executive Director, Ms Clara Chong, and Honorary Adviser and Hong Kong Tourism Board Chairman, The Hon Mrs Selina Chow, JP also attended the meeting.

Extraordinary General Meeting

BBTS held an Extraordinary General Meeting on 24 March 2003 to amend the Memorandum & Articles of the Association.
BBTS held an extraordinary general meeting on 24 March 2003 in the Conference Room of the Hong Kong Tourism Board Information & Services Centre at The Centre in Central for members to approve two Special Resolutions which amended the Memorandum & Articles of the Association. The amendments paved the way for more efficient administration, changes in the role of the Association and compliance with statutes stipulated by the Companies Registry.
