Summer Special Offers and/or A Little Gesture
To lend further weight to the Hong Kong Tourism Board's promotional effort, "Hong Kong Welcomes You", the association initiated "Summer Special Offers" and/or "A Little Gesture" programme in June 2003. These were meant to encourage members to provide tourists with a variety of special offers in the form of discounts or small gifts. Details of their offers were promoted via the QTSA website. Member participation was very encouraging judging by the calls to the association's hotline, which was inundated with enquiries from members.

A treat for mainland visitors
The association also supported the Hong Kong Tourism Board to introduce the "Quality Shopping and Dining Special Offers" programme, which aimed to provide mainland visitors with a series of pleasant surprises by QTS certified merchants. The programme was launched on 1 October and ran until 14 November 2003.

It received an overwhelming response from QTS certified merchants since it proved to be an excellent opportunity for them to showcase their wares to visitors from mainland China.

Understanding visitor spending
Mainland Chinese tourists have added a new dimension to the development of Hong Kong's tourism and retail industries. In a bid to help small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who make up a majority of QTSA members, to understand the shopping behaviors and profiles of this new market segment and help generate more business opportunities, the association joined with the School of Hotel and Tourism Management of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to conduct a survey.
The study, called "Visitors from Mainland China as a Source of Business to SMEs", aimed to evaluate the nature and pattern of patronage of SMEs by mainland Chinese visitors. It also identified the service needs of visitors in four tourism services sectors: audio, video and consumer electronics, jewellery and watches, fashion and beauty, and restaurants. The findings will assist SMEs formulate strategies and tailor-make specific products and services to mainland Chinese visitors.

The survey kicked-off in January 2004 with an assortment of recommendations to trade practitioners and included other deliverables including survey report and CD-ROMs to be released in the 4th quarter of 2004.

Hong Kong Tourism Board was one of the supporting organizations.

To enhance awareness of intellectual property protection among shoppers, the QTSA invited retail members to join the scheme. In return, they received a set of "2004 No Fakes Pledge" in-store material to demonstrate their support for the scheme.
